ABC's of Creativity - K is Kits

In recent conversations with some of my beady friends we have talked about how we got started beading. Many of us can pin point a teacher, class or kit. In many cases all three.

Kits whether purchased for use in a class with a teacher or from a booth, website or bead store to work on at home on your own are a great way to get a head start with a project.

With a kit all of the challenging prep work has been done. Supplies have been chosen and gather. Instructions are ready to use. In some cases findings, needle and thread are also included. Your first challenge may be deciding which color kit to pick.

Often once you have used a kit by one designer you will likely want to do more. Progress your way from simple to more elaborate projects. Or you will want to make your own versions of the design.

If you have never done a specific technique kits can just the thing. You will learn something new and have finished project in the end.

Here are some of my favorites -

Maria's Rypan Design kits were among the first that I ever did. The Chicklet bracelet is a favorite, in fact I recent purchased more chicklets to make more variations. I also like the Cascading Swag series.

Marilyn Gardiner's chain maille kits are wonderful. After my first kit in 2006 I have done a number of others. Here is a classic design, Byzantine Bracelet.

Marcia DeCoster in another fav. She taught in Toronto a few summers ago. I purchased some additional kits to make after the classes. Her elegantly packaged kits include a CD with pattern for printing.

I like to think of future projects as kits. I try to pull together everything I need into one zip bag or basket.

I hope that you will give a kit of a new technique, new designer or and long time favortie designer a try in the near future. Looming in the Summer

Loomed by Pat Moore, Fall 2011

Beaders in the Guelph area will have the opportunity to learn about loomwork and create their our loomed necklace.

On three Tuesday evenings in July (3,10 &17), Maria will be teaching her loomwork series at the Crafter's Cupboard in Guelph, ON.

The first hour of the first evening will be an overview of the looming technique, with photos and finished pieces. You can sign up to attend just this part of the series if your want to have a better understanding of what goes into a loomwork piece.

The balance of evening one will be the pre-stringing of the looms.

Week three finishing! This night will cover steps to complete your project, including joining the band to start weaving a mediallion or stringing swags and other final finishing.

Fringe is the final finishing step for mediallion style pieces. Some may be ready for this step if they are eager weavers between weeks 2 & 3.

"Embellishing Your World" show

It was great sharing my "Embellishing Your World: Beading & Surface Designs" with fellow beadmates on Nov 10th at the Toronto Bead Society. This was an inspirational seminar with beadwork examples and stories from around the world.

What was special that evening was that Naomi, a fellow TBS member, brought her collection of First Nations Beadwork. I featured photographs of her collection in the first five slides of my PowerPoint. We combined the best of two worlds for the benefit of our members. I projected images and pointed out interesting details about the unique artifacts of the Mohawk and Tuscarora Nations. Naomi brought the genuine articles so people could then see them up close. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity for TBS members.

For my half of the display, I brought my collection of beaded "Pysanky" eggs. Several were beaded by Vira Pavlova Witkovska plus other bead artists from Ukraine. The beaded "Lilacs" were made by Oksana, a young student of an after-school Craft Program in Kolomyya. They're so life-like it's hard to believe they're just beads on twisted wires! Amazing... Love it!

I'll be presenting "Embellishing Your World..." to the new West Toronto Beading Guild on Mar 8, 2011 at their regular monthy meeting. We're going to combine it with a hands-on beading workshop on learning how to do the versatile Diagonal Weave. I'm looking forward to inspiring the new beaders!

Coca Cola Extravaganza

Here's my birthday gift creation for a dear friend who LOVES Coca Cola in all shapes and forms. The commemorative soccer balls bottles for FIFA World Cup started it.

Coca Cola caps discovered at the Bead & Button Show made the wearable component of my gift possible. The decoupage beads were made in the Philippines for fellow vendor Priscilla Marban. I chose five different cap styles so I could get a bit of a pattern going. There were many more themes to choose from.

I started stringing the necklace the evening before at the Meet-Up for Toronto beaders in High Park. It was a chilly evening, but in good company and with extra heat from blankets, we kept on beading. The necklace has assorted seed beads strung in between the large disks. Once the cream & gold caps were exhausted, I made a bracelet with the remaining four red ones. For packaging I used the cleverly-designed fountain cup from our travels back from Milwaukee. It was perfect for the "Coca Cola Extravaganza" accessories.

Art of Gerdan - Edmonton

From Feb 11 to 15th I'll be doing my own mini Olympics in Edmonton as guest of Alberta Council for the Ukrainian Arts (ACUA) “Art of Gerdan”.

I'll be giving two presentations and beading workshops at each of three cultural venues. Looking forward to visiting the Kule Folklore Centre at the University of Alberta. The Ukrainian Catholic Women's League of Canada Edmonton Eparchy at Josaphat's Cathedral and Ukrainian Museum of Canada at St. John's Cultural Centre both have Museum Tours included with the "Art of Gerdan" event.
